I am sure I am not alone when I say that my kids don't really like chores. But I feel alone when I am standing in the middle of the house in the middle of a mess that I likely didn't make and requesting assistance.
And by requesting assistance, I mean demanding it.
My kids are pretty savvy about the messes they make at home. They know what I will tolerate on the floor or where to stash something if they hear me coming up the stairs. It is when they have friends over that the chaos ensues.
I don't mind a bit because I truly believe that any mess can be cleaned up, but the boys see it as a work mountain that they will need oxygen to climb. They start yelling dibs on the favorite chore…
I get to vacuum!
Vacuuming is the favorite chore because it includes a machine and in their minds it excuses the vacuumer from any pre-vacuuming preparation. This is where delegation comes into play and everyone gets a chore whether they are the lucky vacuumer or not.
In our family, it works best if each boy tackles a separate room where the mental cleaning scorecard isn't being evaluated on a moment by moment basis – he picked up 3 less blocks than I did! Setting a timer for 5 minutes can be a good finish line motivation. Often that is all that is needed if it is used wisely.
We had some fun with clean up…even my husband got involved:
"Playing" with our new BISSELL® Powerglide® with Lift-Off® Technology has been a lot of fun. It is easy to manuever – even for a 7 year old. I am a little obsessed with the attachments and how easy it is to reach all the little places that need to be cleaned. BISSELL has some great cleaning tips to help make that mountain of dirt at your house easier to climb too.
And that is not all, there is a promo code that is valid through 11/30/2013: POWERGLIDE
