Martin Luther King Jr. is an icon and advocate for racial equality and non-violent change in society.   His “I Have a Dream” speech is one of the most well-known speeches in our country and he is the only man who was not a president to have a national holiday.

Martin Luther King Day is on Monday, January 16, 2012.

Arlington has a full weekend of events planned for everyone of various ages, ethnic and religious backgrounds to come out and celebrate together.

The Arlington MLK celebration is the largest event of its kind in the country, incorporating four days of activities that include an awards banquet, multicultural festival, step show and poetry competitions, day of service and youth musical extravaganza.

6:30 p.m. Friday, January 13, 2012 – Sharing the Dream  Awards Banquet – ˜Kick-Off ™ Celebration.   Dinner, entertainment, scholarships and awards.   New This Year! 3:30 p.m. Saturday, January 14, 2012 – Sharing the Dream  Multicultural Festival – Free Admission!   Follow Dr. King's footsteps and his travels to the seven continents of the world. 6 p.m. Sunday, January 15, 2012 – Sharing the Dream – Hubert Moss Memorial Ecumenical Service.   First Baptist Church, 300 S. Center St. Keynote speaker The Rev. Dr. Zan Holmes,recognized as one of the Civil Rights Movement's Invisible Giants.  Holiday reception immediately follows service hosted by Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc.

8 a.m. to Noon Monday, January 16, 2012 – MLK Day of Service.   Make it a day on, not a day off. Call 817-272-7356 and join us in the spirit of service. Meet at Mission Arlington/Mission Metroplex at 400 W. Abram St. (Breakfast for volunteers hosted by Zeta Phi Beta Sorority, Inc.) First 150 volunteers will get a MLK T-shirt.
