A few weeks ago I pleaded for your help.
I needed some good book recommendations for myself and my boys.
I was overwhelmed by the response – almost 200 of you participated!
So many good suggestions were made that I decided to make a compilation of YOUR reading recommendations.
This is the list for me…
good summer reads for MOM this summer.
These are arranged by order of the number of recommendations – starting with the most popular.
I know this is highly unscientific, but I hope you find it helpful!
Reading Recommendations for Moms this Summer:
- Anything by Jodi Picoult (House Rules, Handle With Care, Change of Heart, Keeping Faith, My Sister's Keeper, Plain Truth, Salem Falls)
- The Help, by Kathryn Stockett — I have read The Help and LOVED it. I didn’t want it to end. Ever.
- The Hunger Games, by Suzanne Collins
- Stephanie Plum novels, by Janet Evanovich
- Time Travelers Wife, by Audrey Niffenegger
- The Sookie Stackhouse vampire mysteries, by Charlaine Harris
- A Dirty Job, and other books by Christopher Moore
- The Guernsey Literary and Potato Peel Pie Society, by Mary Ann Shaffer
- Eat, Pray, Love, by Elizabeth Gilbert — I enjoyed following the Eat, Pray, Love journey. I read it several years ago and it still pops up in my thoughts from time to time.

- Her Fearful Symmetry, by Audrey Niffenegger
- The City of Bones series, by Cassandra Clare
- Isle of Palms, by Dorothea Benton Frank
- Mark of the Lion, by Francine Rivers

- Look Again, by Lisa Scottoline
- The Book Thief, by Markus Zusak
- Anything by Mary Higgins-Clark
- Anything by Mary Kay Andrews
- Anything by Nicholas Sparks — I like many of his books…they are a little mushy for me, but the stories are compelling enough for me to wade through it!

- Catching Fire, by Suzanne Collins
- The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo, by Stieg Larsson
- The Happiness Project, by Gretchen Rubin
I plan on adding comments to this list as I read through it this summer.
If I have any glaring omissions, please mention them in the comments below.
Please watch for future posts that will cover YOUR reading suggestions for BOYS…whoo hoo!
Thanks so much!
Books by Candace Bushnell – author of Sex in the City – they’ll make you happy you live in DFW…avoid Four Blondes…cover looks cute, but it was boring!
Love Jennifer Weiner (Little Earthquakes, Guy Not Taken) & Anita Shreve (Eden Close & Weight of Water) too!
Oh thank goodness – I’ve been trying to put together reading lists for the kids over the summer and this will help!
I’m always trying to get my boys to watch Pride and Prejudice. I made one of them sit and watch the scene where Lydia talks about being such a merry party, and then the scene switches to the sounds of them bickering loudly in the carriage. My son laughed. I love when I’m right. I told him it was funny. I did!
That is a great idea someone else had of reading the spoofs with the boys! I might have to make a special trip to the library right now!
Life Of Pi was great. Can’t wait to see the kids’ list!
Awesome list, but the most important question is… who won the gift card????
Just kidding.
Okay. No I’m not. I’m curious (and broke), and want to see what they suggested that was SOOOO much better than mine. (But I’m not, you know, on the edge of my seat or anything.)
Hah!!
I personally, cannot wait for school to end so I can read Sense and Sensibility and Sea Monsters.
My 12 year old just read City of Ember by Jeanne DuPrau in school, and liked it so much that we had to get the 3 books after it from the library. He hasn’t read much until now, other than Calvin and Hobbes books.
i like a lot of those books. i especially loved the city of bones series by clarissa clare. very very good for a young adult fantasy series.
Thank you for posting your list. I’m always looking for good stuff to read.
I know the list was by what was most popular, so is that the order you’ll read them in? And P.S. as avid of a reader as you are, how are you not on Good Reads??!?!?!
