Just about every year my kids end up with way too much candy in their trick-or-treat baskets. While the trick or treating is always fun, they simply can not eat all that sugar. But what’s a parent to do?

Invite the Switch Witch over! We started this annual tradition the very first year my kids could trick or treat after reading about it online, and the idea is super cute and simple.

After trick or treating, have your kids sort through their candy and put some of it into a bag or bucket. Before they go to bed, have them leave their discarded candy by the door, and tell them the Switch Witch is coming to take the candy to other kids who weren’t able to get any.

Overnight the candy will disappear, thanks to the “Switch Witch,” and the next morning they’ll have a new toy instead. They’ll totally be delighted with a new toy, and they won’t be chowing on down on way too much sugar.

It’s a win-win for them and you! And yeah, I may sneak some pieces of candy out for myself too.

If you love this post trick-or-treating idea and really want to get into it, there are multiple books that share the story of the Switch Witch. This book, from Four Boys Industries, even comes with a cute doll.

Or check out switch-witch.com, which sells a super cute plush doll along with a beautiful illustrated book; they were even featured on Shark Tank.

Of course, you don’t need the Switch Witch doll and book to make the magic happen, but it’s a fun addition to the tradition.

Has the Switch Witch visited your house yet this year?
