As a mom with a baby eating baby food, this information is quite scary and disheartening… A New Study Says 95% of Tested Baby Foods in the US Contain Toxic Metals and it something worth knowing about and sharing with other parents.
A new study completed by the Healthy Babies Bright Futures examined 168 different baby foods and found that 95% of them tested, contained toxic metals including lead, arsenic, cadmium and even mercury. Yes, 95%! That is an alarming rate. Even worse, 1 out of every 4 baby foods tested contained all 4 of those toxic metals.
This study concluded almost the same findings as a study conducted by the FDA (food and drug administration) back in May that found one or more of the same metals in 33 out of 39 types of baby food tested. Again, an alarming rate.
What made this newest study different is that more brands were tested than in previous studies. In fact, for this study, 61 different brands were tested. Those brands included brand names and even store/niche names.
What is so shocking is that many of the brands are ones we thought as parents, we could trust. Many of them even claim to be 100% natural or organic but these findings prove otherwise. The brands and stores tested are below in the chart.
Aside from baby food jars, other baby food was tested including rice cereal, fruit juices, baby formula and even the puffs and other snacks. Foods with the highest risk for toxic metals were rice-based products, sweet potatoes and fruit juices.
“Even in the trace amounts found in food, these contaminants can alter the developing brain and erode a child’s IQ. The impacts add up with each meal or snack a baby eats.”
And they are not wrong. The thing is, our children should NEVER have these sort of toxins in their food. If it isn’t truly 100% natural, it has no business being in our food and it is upsetting to find out this information. The goal seems to be the same from the researchers of this study.
“HBBF urges all baby food companies to establish a goal of no measurable amounts of cadmium, lead, mercury, and inorganic arsenic in baby and children’s food, in recognition of the absence of a known safe level of exposure, and to achieve steady progress toward that goal.”
So, what can parents give their children? The report mentions these foods are better and contain LESS arsenic than the other choices:
Non-rice snacks
Diced or Mashed apples, applesauce (unsweetened), bananas, barley with diced vegetables, beans, cheese, grapes (cut lengthwise), hard-boiled eggs, peaches, and yogurt
Oatmeal, corn, barley, quinoa, and others
Instead of teething biscuits for teething babies, try a frozen banana, a peeled and chilled cucumber, a clean, cold wet washcloth or spoon
While this information may be quite upsetting and concerning, it is something you now know so we can all be more careful and aware what we are feeding our children.
