For those that may not have watched Sesame Street for some time, it has been 2 years since Julia, the first Muppet with autism, was introduced to fans.

And now, with April being Autism Awareness Month, Sesame Street is celebrating by putting Julia front and center.

This month the show intends to bring in new characters, a special new episode, host in-person events and more!

According a press release, fans of the show can expect:

“In honor of Autism Acceptance Month, Sesame Workshop launched new videos and materials featuring the family of Julia, a 4-year-old Sesame Street Muppet with autism, as part of its Sesame Street and Autism: See Amazing in All Children initiative. New resources, freely available in English and Spanish on sesamestreet.org/autism, bring to life Julia’s parents, big brother, and companion dog, and focus on what all families share in common while providing tools to help overcome everyday challenges.” (source)

In addition to all of the new resources for parents and children, HBO and PBS KIDS will premiere a Julia-focused Sesame Street episode on April 8. In it, Elmo, Abby Cadabby, and Alan help Julia feel less scared about getting a haircut by playing ‘hair salon’ and pretending to be hair stylists. Julia will be the star of the show!

Leading up to the new episode, on April 6, Barnes & Noble will hold storytime events in over 630 locations nationwide, featuring the Family Forever hardcover storybook just released by Random House Children’s Books. You can attend this storybook event and get a coupon from our Café for a grilled cheese sandwich with milk or juice for $4!

This could be a great storytime and lunch outing with the family!

If you haven’t met Julia yet, you can watch the full episode where Julia was introduced to the Sesame Street cast.
