If you are a wine lover like me, you probably have a bottle or two stashed away somewhere being saved for a “special” occasion that has yet to happen. That occasion approaches!   Saturday, February 26th is the annual Open That Bottle night!
She is Dallas info:   Open That Bottle Night is a yearly event started in 2000.   You can share your special bottle stories on their website.   You also can follow stories on twitter with the #otbn hashtag.
Open That Bottle night is the perfect opportunity to dig out that cherished bottle and enjoy it for no other reason than just enjoying it. Last year, my husband and I reached into the depths of our collection and unearthed a bottle that I had given to him sometime in the early ’90’s, before we were married.   The note that accompanied it had long fallen off the ribbon encircling the bottle.   While I don’t recall what occasioned the gift, I do remember that we were supposed to save it and drink it 10 years hence.   Which was several years ago. That bottle was an ’86 Stag’s Leap Cabernet Sauvignon.   Dusty, the label a little rough around the edges, looking a big darkened and past it’s prime.   Sort of like me. That night was just another Saturday night.   We were tired from a day full of swim meets and horse shows.   Several children (many of whom were not my own) were bouncing in and out of the house.   To accompany this auspicious wine, we were eating “leftover” pizza of all things.   Not day-old pizza, mind you, but fresh pizza dough topped with the week’s accumulation of leftovers.   It was certainly not a “special occasion” by any means. But we did it.   We opened that bottle.   It was 22 years old, the cork was still moist, it was full of promise.   Kind of like me way back when I gave that bottle to my husband. It was drinkable.   Very earthy (I like that), tasted old (as it  should), but it was probably just a bit past it’s prime.   We enjoyed it anyway. “Over the hill, but do-able,” pronounced my husband. Just like me. I challenge you to go for it!   Find that amazing bottle you have kept back and enjoy it for no particular reason whatsoever!
