If you are looking for a gift this season that will fill the hours of holiday down time, I have a really good suggestion. The Graphic Skinz Design Studio {Kids Activities Blog sponsor} is an activity that we can’t stop.  In fact, once we  start “skinning”, we  look around the world in a different way!  Suddenly,  I am  looking at everything through the filter of whether or not it can be skinned. Pssst…keep reading because we are giving one away!  Details at the end. Give Hours of Fun - Graphic Skinz

Graphic Skinz Design Studio

The Graphic Skinz Design Studio is a battery-operated, super-suction vacuum chamber that allows you to apply full-color graphics to 3D objects such as toys, models, cell phone cases, jewelry, and just about anything that fits into the chamber.  <—You will be sizing things up from now on! Graphic Skinz flower box Kids are able to customize and create like never before.  These remind me of temporary tattoos, except you are able to apply them to objects. The Design Studio is a huge kit  (affiliate links) containing:
  • Graphic Skinz vacuum chamber machine (some easy assembly required)
  • Large sponge
  • 11 piece butterfly model
  • 10 piece seahorse model
  • 12 piece flower box craft
  • 30 Graphic Skinz Transfers (two sizes)
  • Sponge detailer
  • Comprehensive & easy-to-read instructions
The first thing you will need is 4 AA batteries.  There are also additional  dozen  Skinz Packs that are skinning refills in different themes.  We had the Food Fun, Animal Prints, and Groovy packets.  Each contains an additional 18 Graphic Skinz Transfers.  My favorite one was the Groovy package.  It had a lot of bright, happy patterns that coordinated well with many of the original Design Studio sheets.  What you see in the pictures of this article is a combination of all the different transfers because it is so fun to mix and match.

How to Use the Graphic Skinz Design Studio

Let’s start with the butterfly model that is included in the Design Studio as an example of how easy the process is! Graphic Skinz Design Studio model pieces
  1. Take the pieces out of the plastic bag and choose a Graphic Skinz Transfer for each piece (if the piece is small, you will have enough pattern left for another small piece or two).Graphic Skinz pattern pages
  2. Cut the patterned sheet to an appropriate size and cut off any white border remaining.
  3. Remove the plastic cover from the transfer page which reveals a slightly sticky surface making it easy to wrap around the piece.wrap graphic skinz paper
  4. Wrap this in the wet sponge.
  5. Place the wet sponge in the chamber and close the lid.push Graphic Skinz Design Studio vacuum button
  6. Push the vacuum button until the chamber is fully contracted (for us, that was about 15 seconds).Graphic Skinz Design Studio Vacuum Chamber
  7. Wait at least 10 seconds and then open the vacuum chamber lid and pull out the sponge-covered object.
  8. Unwrap carefully, remove the paperbacking that is now loosely hanging on the object.Graphic Skinz hearts
  9. Using the sponge detailer (or a dampened finger), smooth edges and gently smoosh (totally a word)the occasional bubble.Graphic Skinz Butterfly
  10. Let the piece dry and then assemble the model once all the pieces are skinned.

Beyond the Graphic Skinz Design Studio Models

And here comes the even more addicting part.  Look around and find things that can get wet and that are small enough to fit into the vacuum chamber. Graphic Skinz frisbee I went through our toy bin and found this cute frisbee.  It was likely a kids meal prize at some point and once it was skinned, it took on a new life!  Other objects to consider are light switch covers, iPhone cover, small containers, plastic toys, holiday ornaments, small picture frames, jewelry – earrings, necklace pendants, charms, bracelets, etc.  Go on a scavenger hunt through the house or pick up some fun things next time at the dollar store.

More Information About the Graphic Skinz Design Studio

The price of the entire kit is only $19.99.  The Graphic Skinz Design Studio makes a great gift for kids ages 6 & up.  My 9 year old son  loved it and it is on the list for my 11 year old niece (shhhh!).  There are plenty of Graphic Skins Transfers in the big kit, but I really liked the ability to add some additional designs.  I would recommend picking up an additional Skinz Pack or two if you are giving it as a gift.  Also, there are some additional model sets – like a horse – that you could buy for use in the original vacuum chamber.
