Way back in 1988 I had one of those scrapbook journals…you know the ones from Josten’s that had SENIORS scribbled across the front in a fancy font.
The last page of the journal was a list of questions about the future. I filled them out predicting what would happen in the next 5 years, 10 years, career and marriage.
I was pretty sure I had it all figured out…I mean,
I was 18!
I was brilliant!
The whole world was mine!
For the most part, I was on target. I finished my Master’s Degree in Physical Therapy on schedule, got married as predicted and was “incredibly happy”. My largest error was declaring that I would have “
NO children”.
Yes. I capitalized and underlined it.
I was that sure.
No children for me.
Yep.
None.
Nada.
Ummm…fast forward a
few {OK, like maybe 22} years and here I sit in my home “incredibly happy” with my MPT, husband and
3 children.
Ooops!
My no-children resolve lasted 11 years. And then I realized how WRONG I was at 18.
Thankfully we are allowed to change our minds.
My Ryan was born when I was 32 years old. I was overjoyed and spent the first year of his life photographing and scrapbooking his every waking moment {and likely many of his non-waking ones since he was just precious when asleep}.
When he got to that magic age of 14 months, he was so adorable I had to have another one.
Which I did. Reid was born a year later.
I spent the next year chasing a toddler and tending to a baby and then Reid hit that magic age of 14 months, he was so adorable I had to have another one.
Which I did. Rhett was born a year later.
I spent the next year entertaining a pre-schooler, chasing a toddler and tending to a baby and then Rhett hit that magic age of 14 months, he was so adorable…
…I do
NOT need another one.
I was that sure.
No more children for me.
Yep.
None.
Nada.
At 18 I
thought I knew.
At 41 I
know I know.
Age and experience have their advantages.
My advice to anyone who isn’t sure if they should have another kid is to continue having children
until you know.
I promise you that you will get to a point where
you KNOW when your family is complete.
My limit is 3 boys.
Anything more would be
overly blessed.
What about you?
How and when do you decide your family is complete?
