JDaniel’s Mom had a great guest post from when I was on maternity leave, it was brilliant.   She used colored paint chips and had a color hunt grocery game that she did with her preschooler, Daniel.   We adapted it slightly last week when we were at the new Save-A-Lot that opened in Grand Prairie, TX.   Many thanks to LeeAnn, from Mommy’s Wishlist, for joining in our game (and mostly helping to keep me sane, Baby K was pretty cranky!).   The kids each picked a color from our paint chip collection and would tell me when they found an object that matched their color. . Save-a-lot also had a game idea that they had some local kids play (not mine as much as the Quirky Kids wanted to, the photo is staged).   Basically, the store made cards of typical items to put into a family’s cart.   Then local kids raced to see who could fill their carts up with the items first.   I could easily see this game being adapted for a family.   I might just print pictures of the items we are shopping for and have my kiddos fill the cart for us next time we are out! . . .

  1. Have them make up stories based on what you buy! Start them off “Once Upon a Time there was a big jar of peanut butter…” If they get lost just throw in another line about another item “So when the big jar of peanut butter climbed the fence he saw a pretty red strawberry, and …!” It engages their imaginations and keeps them busy

  2. Biggest tip is to keep them occupied! Either bring a toy with you, have them “help” with shopping, or whatever engages your toddler. Also have your list ready to go so you get done ASAP 🙂

  3. I remember those days! I used to go shopping without them as much as I could. When I did have them along, I just tried to go as quickly as possible, and right after mealtime so they would not be asking for candy or other treats.

My kids are a little older now (8 and 10). I rarely go grocery shopping with them because they live with their father right now. However, I have experienced the “Mommy, can you get me ________________?” scenario now and then. They do have a little of their own money to spend. I try to encourage them not to spend it on little toys like Silly Banz all the time, but if they keep their grades up, once in a while, I allow them to have a treat.

  4. I tell my kids what’s on our list and sometimes they get to pick an item of fresh produce (fruit) to take home as their treat. I love the idea of a pictorial list for them to participate in the shopping with me!
