Looking for a fun activity to do with your family with a sweet reward?   Head out to my favorite pick your own organic orchard Fall Creek Farms. fIt’s strawberry pickin’ time! fresh-picked-strawberries1 Picking strawberries at Fall Creek Farms has become a popular annual tradition with a lot of North Texas families.   Fall Creek Farms has over 2 acres of strawberries which include 20,000 Chandler and Sequoia strawberry plants.   The crop is usually ready April 1st and by early May they’re all picked out so make plans to go soon. Strawberry pricing: 1 – 6 pounds is $3.00 per pound.   Anything over 6 pounds is $2.50 per pound.   Cash or check accepted. You can even make a reservation to stay at the Carson House Bed and Breakfast right there on Fall Creek Farms.

Then head home with your bounty and make this scrumptious recipe for Strawberries and Mountain Cake:
  • 1/2 cup shortening (butter or margarine)
  • 1 cup sugar
  • 2 eggs
  • 1 tsp. vanilla
  • 1/2 cup milk
  • 1-1/2 cups flour
  • 1 tsp. baking powder
  • 1/4 tsp. salt
With electric mixer, cream shortening and sugar; add eggs and vanilla and beat well.   Mix in milk.   Combine dry ingredients, add to previous ingredients and mix well.   Pour into greased square cake pan and bake 35-40 minutes at 350 ° or until toothpick inserted in center comes out clean.   Serve with strawberries and whipped cream or vanilla ice cream.   Enjoy!
