Rhett(4) complains that sometimes I don’t answer him when he calls for me. 4 year old boy calls me mommyIt isn’t that I intentionally tune him out, but looking back I admit to occasionally avoiding yet another question, request or debate. Today we were sitting quietly together and Rhett looked and me and said, Mommy, did you hear what word I said? I hadn’t heard what he said, but had seen him mouth a word in a whisper. ย  I replied that he had said MOMMY. Mommy, how did you know? I just know. No, HOW did you know? I just know. He thought for a minute and tried again. ย  His little lips only moved a tiny bit, and just a breath of sound escaped him. Mommy, what did I say THAT time? Mommy. MOMMY, HOW DID YOU KNOW? I just knew. But I said it so quietly you couldn’t hear it. I just knew. He sat back with a puzzled expression on his face and with determination he decided he would try it one more time. ย  This time his lips didn’t move at all and he was completely silent. ย  The only clue that I had that he had “said” another word was his heading nodding up then down for emphasis. Mommy, what did I say then? Mommy. He looked at me stunned. ย  He believed I had just read his mind. Mommy, how do you do that? I laughed and said, You start ALL your sentences with the word MOMMY so it was a lucky guess. He starts all his sentences with mommy. I hadn’t realized that until I said it. ย  I hear the word mommy come out of his mouth more often than anything else. Rhett (of course) disagreed, ย  Mommy, I DO NOT! See you just did! Mommy, I don’t do… You did it again! Mommmmm….. Yep! ย  Again! By this time we were laughing so hard that he couldn’t even form the beginnings of an “M”. ย  He recovered a bit and tried to speak, ย  Mommy, I ….and then started uncontrollably giggling over the truth. He starts all his sentences with mommy. I can’t even put into words what that revelation does to my heart. He starts all his sentences with mommy…

  1. You KNOW I had to read this asap after our conversation:
This post has given me a massive urge to hug up my babies and keep them there for as long as humanly possible….

  2. Wow. It isn’t too often that I read something that truly makes my eyes well up.

We want a third child down the road and I keep saying I want it to be a girl (because I am greatly outnumbered right now, if you catch my drift) but there is seriously something to be said for the way little boys can pull at their mama’s heartstrings.

Excuse me, I need to go give my boys a hug now…

  3. Yep, my 4 year old boy does that, too. Except sometimes (okay MOST of the time!) he can’t finish the sentence without starting it over 3 or 4 times and EACH TIME he must say Mommy. Seriously! Sometimes, he will start with “Mommy?” I say “yes?”…he says, “Mommy, can I…Um, Mommmy?” I say, “Yeeessss?” “Mommy? Can I”…and it keeps going from there. After the 3rd or 4th “Mommy?” without actually SAYING ANYTHING I begin to get a little frustrated. My yeses become very long and drawn out.

Is it all 4 year olds? Or just boys…

  4. So sweet. My kids start all there sentences with Mommy too. But its like this — Mom? Mom? Mom? Mom?

Until I answer them. Until I acknowledge they have said my name they won’t continue with what they have to say. It drives me crazy.
