The Center for Children and Families at UT Dallas will hold it’s Second Annual Forum featuring Dr. Suniya Luthar of Columbia University.

Dr. Luthar’s research involves vulnerability and resilience among various populations including youth in poverty and children in families affected by mental illness. Her recent work has focused on children in affluent communities and in particular substance use and anxiety in these communities.
She Is Dallas Info: The Children and Families Forum will be held on Thursday, September 22nd.   All daytime Forum events will be held at the University of Texas at Dallas in the Galaxy Rooms of the Student Union.   The evening lecture will be located at the Jonsson Performance Hall on the UT Dallas campus.  All events at the forum are FREE and open to the public, but registration is required for the morning and afternoon events. Event Schedule 9:00-9:30am   Registration 9:30-10:30am   “Resilience Among Children and Families at Risk” –     Why are some children who face tremendous stress and trauma able to do well whereas others struggle? Dr. Luthar will discuss her research examining the processes that help children thrive in spite of tremendous adversity. 10:30-10:45am Break 10:45-11:45am Panel discussion on Risk and Resilience featuring researchers from UT Dallas and other developmental experts 11:45-1:00pm Lunch 1:00-2:30pm     “Privileged but Pressured: Children of Affluent Families” –   Dr. Luthar's studies show that by the time they reach adolescence, affluent kids today are two to three times more likely to suffer from depression and anxiety, and far more likely to use alcohol and drugs than their lower income peers. A brief presentation by Dr. Luthar on her study findings will be followed by a panel discussion of the risks experienced by youth in upwardly mobile communities. Topics to be discussed include what creates dangerous pressures and what helps children thrive in these communities. 7:30pm –   Public lecture: “Fostering Resilience: Who Tends the Caregivers? Who Mothers Mommy?” by Dr. Suniya Luthar.   Dr. Luthar will discuss her research examining how women meet the challenges of balancing their multiple roles as mothers, spouses, friends, and employees.   Location: Continuing education credits are available for a $25 processing fee for the following organizations:
  • Early Intervention Specialists (ECI) –   This program has been approved for 4.5 contact hours of EIS continuing professional education credit. ECI approval of continuing professional education does not imply endorsement of of course content, specific products, or clinical procedures.
  • Social Workers, LPCs and LMFTs –   This workshop has been approved for 4.5continuing education credit for Social Workers, LPCs and LMFTs by the Texas Chapter of the National Association of Social Workers.
  • SLPs –   This program has been approved for 3.5 hours of continuing education hours for Texas Licensed SLPs.
