A portion of Ohio is nestled in the western foothills of the Appalachian Mountains, and the state name is Iroquois for the “great river.” Lake Erie, one of the Great Lakes, was also derived from the Iroquois Native Americans. To the north and west of the Ohio River, you’ll find Marietta. It was the first city in the state established in 1788, it was also the first permanent settlement in the Northwest Territory.
