Not only that, but eight of 46 United States Presidents elected were from Ohio: William Henry Harrison (9th), Ulysses S. Grant (18th), Rutherford B. Hayes (19th), James Garfield (20th), Benjamin Harrison (23rd), William McKinley (25th), William H. Taft (27th), and Warren G. Harding (29th), making Ohio the mother of modern presidents! A portion of Ohio is nestled in the western foothills of the Appalachian Mountains, and the state name is Iroquois for the “great river.” Lake Erie, one of the Great Lakes, was also derived from the Iroquois Native Americans.
