All during Illness watch 2008 here at the Nirvana Reid complained that we hadn’t been to the library “forever…”. So not wanting to deprive the child, yesterday we took our first trip out of the house in 8 days and stopped by our local branch. The boys quickly made their way to the ONLY SHELF IN THE WHOLE LIBRARY that has books they like and they made their selections. Yes dear reader, the library has tens of thousands of books, our home has hundreds of books but we load up the minivan, drive to the library to check out one of these 15 books over and over and over again. This is the children’s non-fiction construction section. We have checked out each of these books multiple times. I have even paid for one of these books (shhhhh…yes, even after I tore up the house in an exhaustive search I still had to do the walk of shame to the library desk). Let’s do a little mommy math…the gas for multiple trips to the library + the time it takes to drive to the library + replacement cost of library books = maybe I would be better off searching Amazon.com for these 15 books and making a permanent purchase.

  1. Oh I can relate. I like the library, but there’s only so many times I can renew the 3 books that my daughter just won’t let go of!

  2. your a good mommy! 🙂 I love that they pick from the same 15 books each time. 🙂 they might branch out one of these days you never know.
i would love to take my kiddos to the library, but ours is run by some crotchity old lady and it isn’t very child friendly, not even the children’s section. and my kids are pretty outspoken (loud) and full of life (wild) lol
enjoy your reading. hope you all start to feel better!!
    Hugs, Jenn

  3. You seriously make me giggle! You’re so right – Amazon used. That’s the only way I go; however, I’m not a mommy and the times when she took me to the library as a child was priceless – actually getting choked up thinking about it. Sometimes I wonder if it was those memories that made me a book/word lover. Now, as I write my memoir I think back to that sweet, sweet time in my life when everything was so good.

  4. Yes, but when you take the kiddies to the library they associate books with something “Special” which is ALWAYS a good thing.

  5. That is exactly why I am slowly amassing the The Library of Congress in my living room. I can’t be bothered with all that driving and such. Besides, the Toddler loves books so much, I don’t know that she would be willing to ever give any back to the library.

  6. I know what you mean. I’m torn between encouraging the use of the library or supporting writers by purchasing their books. I tend to come down on the side of buying books, because I love the idea of building a library. But kids may not save their books forever, anyway. The point is to encouraging reading, no matter the source, so I don’t think you can go wrong either way.

That said, my kids do love to go to the library. And the bookstore. Gee, aren’t I helpful?

  7. I so know what you mean. My friends make fun of me for all the fines I’ve paid and gas I’ve “wasted” going to and from the library.

BUT, I challenge them by saying that I am supporting the library (and you are encouraging your kids to make it part of their life–reading is important and all). Besides my fines help keep that little old librarian in her sweaters with those cute kittens on them and those WOW so trendy reading glasses. Yeah for me AND for you, gosh darn it!
