It doesn’t get any easier (or more delicious!) than making Air Fryer grilled cheese sandwiches.  Grilled cheese is one of my family’s favorite things to make! Buttery, crispy bread toasted to perfection, and melted cheese. It’s a dish that pleases people of all ages, and it’s sure to be a hit.

How To Make Grilled Cheese Sandwiches in the Air Fryer

It’s also an easy recipe to make, and to teach kids when they are ready to learn how to cook! Making grilled cheese in an Air Fryer makes the entire process even easier.

My favorite thing about making grilled cheese sandwiches, is that you can add just about any ingredient to make a variety of sandwiches, and switch things up.

I love to use guacamole, sliced tomato, and mozzarella cheese to make a combination of grilled cheese and avocado toast! I have also added bacon to cheddar cheese for another delicious grilled cheese combination.

This Air Fryer Grilled Cheese Recipe:

  • Prep Time: 5 minutes
  • Cook Time: 7-8 minutes

The best thing about grilled cheese, is that you only need basic ingredients to make it!

Ingredients – Air Fryer Grilled Cheese

  • 2 slices sourdough bread or another good crusty bread
  • Mild cheddar cheese, grated **see notes 
  • Monterey jack cheese, grated, or your favorite 
  • 1 tablespoon butter, melted 
  • 1 tablespoon mayonnaise

You can grate your own brick cheese, or buy shredded cheese.

INSTRUCTIONS – AIR FRYER GRILLED CHEESE 

Step 1

Preheat Air Fryer to 360 degrees F for 5 minutes.

The secret to the BEST Air Fryer grilled cheese is using more than one type of cheese! It adds so much flavor to your sandwich.

Step 2

Grate cheese if you are using a block.

You can substitute a plant-based butter for a healthier/vegan option.

Step 3

Spread butter on one side of both pieces of bread.

Another trick to make the yummiest grilled cheese in the Air Fryer is buttering BOTH sides of your bread.

Step 4

Pile the grated cheese on one side of the bread.

Have you ever made your grilled cheese with mayonnaise before? Don’t knock it until you try it!

Step 5

Spread a thin layer of mayonnaise on the outside of the sandwich, place it into the preheated air fryer basket with the mayonnaise side facing down.

If you’re not a mayo fan, skip this step, and just use butter on the bread.

Step 6

Spread a line layer of mayonnaise on the other side.

The hardest part about this Air Fryer grilled cheese recipe is waiting for your sandwich to cool off enough to be able to take a bite!

Step 7

Cook for 5 minutes at 360 degrees F, flip over and continue cooking for 3 minutes or until golden brown and crispy.

Step 8

Serve immediately. 

Notes:

  • You can also use cheese slices or shredded packaged cheese. 
  • Cooking times may vary with different Air Fryers.

You just need gluten free bread, butter, and cheese, and then you have a gluten free grilled cheese sandwich.

HOW TO MAKE GLUTEN FREE GRILLED CHEESE IN AIR FRYER

If you swap out regular bread for gluten free bread, you have gluten free grilled cheese! It’s that simple!

Be sure to check the labels on all other ingredients you use, to make sure they are also gluten free.

Being vegan doesn’t mean you have to miss out on grilled cheese!

  • There are some very yummy vegan cheeses at the grocery store! Daiya and Follow Your Heart make delicious vegan cheese products.
  • As far as vegan butter goes, Miyokos is my current favorite!
