This is the news I’ve been hoping for… It was JUST announced that a New Study Shows The Coronavirus May Die Faster When Exposed to Sunlight, this is HUGE!
Ever since the beginning of the COVID-19 pandemic, people have been wondering, “Will the virus die in warmer temperatures?” and finally, we may have an answer!
In a press briefing today, William Bryan of The Department of Homeland Security discussed findings in a new research study and what they found was, the virus seems to have a shorter half life in warmer temperatures and in direct sunlight.
The chart below shows the condition (whether it is a surface or in the air), the temperature, humidity and the half life of the virus under those conditions. As you can see, the virus particles in the air, in warmer temps, lives for about 1.5 minutes!!
So, what does that mean? It means we might just get relief from this virus over the next few months. That also means, now is the PERFECT time to get our kids and families outside, in the sun and enjoying fresh air and outdoor activities (while still practicing social distancing of course). Really, it could be what our lives depend on over the next few months. Some good, old-fashioned SUN.
“In summary within the conditions we have tested to date. The virus in droplets of saliva survives best in indoors and dry conditions and does not survive as well in droplets of saliva…The virus dies the quickest in the presence of direct sunlight.” William Bryan
So, as the warmer weather approaches, we may have some relief from being stuck inside. Sure, I fully expect to be cautious, careful and head back into self-isolation come Fall but for now, this is some good news during this time. Let’s just hope it holds true as the weather heats up even more.
In addition to these findings, they gave a brief update on disinfectants that have been tested to kill the virus saying:
“We are also testing disinfectants that are readily available….bleach will kill the virus in 5 minutes, isopropyl alcohol will kill the virus in 30 seconds and that is with no manipulation, no rubbing. Just spray it on and let it go. Rub it and it goes away even faster” – William Bryan
So, there you have it. Sun, heat and some disinfectants are now the best defense we have against this virus over the next few months.
