My goal this year was to get all three boys on skis. The older boys have skied a week or two each of the last two years. Ryan(7) is now going down green and green/blue slopes carefully. Reid(5) is a green slope skier with supervision and a little direction. Rhett(3) has never been on skis, but has been trash-talking the entire family for weeks… I am going to race with Grandpa. I am going to win even though I fall down one time. I am fast. I want to go up the tallest mountain. The great winter clothes and gear hand-me-down ceremony of 2009 occurred. Reid is now wearing Ryan’s old gear, Rhett is now in Reid’s and Ryan gets new – sometimes it is nice to be #1. I took Rhett out to the hill. He hopped on the magic carpet that took him to the top of the bunny slope and declared with out-stretched hand in my direction… I don’t need you! I squeezed in a little instruction and then went to stand in the middle of the hill to wait for his descent. Turns out he has mad ski skillz. He skis with amazing control for a three year old UNTIL he gets within 10 feet of me so that he can use me as an emergency brake. He has no incentive to stop. Great. He has no incentive to stop. Yep. He laughs when he falls. He runs into me for giggles. He has no incentive to stop. He begged to go to the top of the mountain, but I assured him that I would never take him until he can prove to me that he can stop when I ask. He giggled… And plowed into me. The good news is that this activity wears him out. Coincidentally, chasing him all over the hill trying to keep him from DEATH does the same to me…

  1. It sounds like he skis just like I do — only I need something considerably larger than my mother to serve as an effective emergency brake. So I mostly just fall over when I get to the bottom of the hill. It works just fine. 🙂

  2. He is so cute. I have only gone snowboarding. When I went there was a layer of ice on top of the snow so it was kind of difficult. I really want to try skiing.

  3. Too cute! Gotta love a trash talker who follows through. My advice, Get out of the way…give him some incentive to stop! LOL

I got me a pair of X Country skis last year…now I just need some snow!
My kids would probably be great skiers….I’m a easy trail gal myself…and hubby has never skied. We are concentrating on ice skating this year. My Dad is the ski pro in this outfit…75 and still skis Aspen, Vail, Vermont…

  4. We’re hoping to get the boys up on skis this year. Gremlin would drop off a cliff just to watch me jump after him. HRH is cautious and Daddy is a great skier and teacher. Maybe Gremlin and I can tube while Daddy takes my HRH down.

  5. He is sooooo cute! And yes, it’s always a “good thing” when you can wear them out instead of vice versa!
