Pond life can be fascinating for kids. My son has always loved looking for
water bugs but now he is even more fascinated by them after this activity.
Kids Activities Blog encourages parents to let their kids get fascinated with nature and the great outdoors with simple activities like this.
Pond Life
Ponds are great for fishing. If you are lucky, you may even find some ducks to feed. However, there is so much more life under the water. Here’s how we found out.

We took scoops of water from a local freshwater pond. These scoops contained plant material as well as lots of insects to study. The kids enjoyed just peering into their tray to see what might be swimming around in there.
Water Bugs
Then we scooped a few spoonfuls of the pond water into a small dish to study the contents more closely. The kids used some plastic spoons to scoop up large water bugs and other insects. They also used a magnifying glass to study the creatures up close. If you have access to a microscope, your child will be absolutely amazed when they look at all the life that they will see in one drop of water.
Bird Watching
But plants and bugs aren’t the only living things your child can study at a pond. A pond is a great place for bird watching. Ponds are home to different kinds of ducks, geese, swans, and many other amazing birds. Give your child a book that identifies birds in your area by descriptions and pictures. Let them study the birds at a local pond and learn how to identify the different types of birds by their features. Encourage them to count the number of different species they saw. Can they count the number of birds of each species at the pond that day? How many ducks? How many geese?
