“In an old house in Paris that was covered with vines lived twelve little girls in two straight lines.” With this classic storybook line, the audience enters the world of Madeline and the Gypsies. In this episode of Ludwig Bemelmans’ series, Madeline’s naughty neighbor Pepito, the son of the Spanish Ambassador, proves a bad influence when he convinces Madeline to run away with the gypsy circus. The two are adopted by the mysterious Gypsy Mama and they experience “life on the road,” complete with sleeping in late, no rules or schedules to follow and lots of exciting adventures! In the end, however, it’s Miss Clavel and the girls to their rescue just in the nick of time. Madeline and the Gypsies opens January 27, with evening performances on Fridays at 7:30 p.m. and afternoon shows on Saturdays and Sundays at 2:30 p.m. through February 12. There are daytime shows suitable for school field trips on Thursday, Feb. 2 at 9:00am and noon. The play is recommended for audiences aged 4+.
