Days of the Week
My kids love knowing what day it is and what to expect this afternoon, tomorrow, next week, whose birthday is coming next. You get the picture. I think it is amazing how we were programmed to have a concept and a fascination with time!
How did you help your kids learn the days of the week??
We have a giant chalkboard calendar over our kitchen sink that the family uses to keep track of upcoming events. I have been amazed at how quickly the kids learned the concept of “next week” or “next month” by counting down days to their much anticipated activity. It has taken longer for my kids to understand the concepts of days.
Make a Calendar collage of events that happened the month previously. Cut up the calendar. Put it back together. Use the numerical “dates” to put the days in order and as you do talk about how you did something fun on Saturday.
Have a “Day” tradition. Make Monday’s your cleaning day, Tuesday the day for errands, Wednesday for playdates, etc. Have a different and predictable activty each “day” of the week. It will help kids differentiate the different days in the week (instead of them all mash together).
Sing Silly Songs – We love the song by They Might be Giants, “Never Go to Work”. My boys think it is great as that is their “dream” for their Daddy, they love days when he does not go to work and plays with them all day long!
