I love being inspired by others online! Today’s activity of creating a road-making, rice-dumping machiene was inspired in part by Deborah of Teach Preschool, she featured how to color rice a few weeks ago on her facebook page, by Teaching 2 & 3 Year olds and her painting with cars activity and by When you never Expect 2, who taped crayons to her construction vehicles… and finally by the massive machines in our area that are building a highway. We got to watch them pour cement pilings for a bridge support last week – they make my son’s day every time we drive by! .

What do you need to create a rice-cement pouring construction vehicles?

Colored rice – because colored is better 🙂 Rubber band (or tape) A Car A Funnel . preschoolers reenacting coad construction with riceThe kids started as I expected dumping and pouring the rice, but then began filing the car with loads of rice. They made roads of rice, mountains of rice, etc. We picked a car that can drive itself, you know you pull it back and off it goes, unfortunately it does not work so well with rice scattered everywhere! I wish (and Z-man does too) that we had a remote controlled car. I can only imagine how much fun this would have been if he could have been behind a literal toggle stick remote. A remote controlled car is on our birthday request list – I bet they will still be working on the highway then. Another thing that we are going to try next time we do this is to use a slimy goop. What kiddo doesn’t like goop! . A big thanks to Xenon Project for sponsoring this post.   We are drooling over their remote control toys (starting at $25).   There sponsorship is helping fund our adoption!

  2. We have done similar activities before with rice and construction vehicles, or flour and construction vehicles (good for getting vehicle track marks).
I’ve never thought to add a pull back or remote control car. I think it would definitely add to the fun!
