DIY World Map Mural
As a former Social Studies Teacher, I love geography and I want to instill a global-mindset into my preschoolers minds. We recently moved and are having fun transforming the new house into a home – i.e. we are swamped with reconstruction projects. I wanted to liven up the blah wall that was left after we opened up the office area to become a eat-in kitchen, and wanted to imprint to the world into my kids minds. We are so small compare to the scope of global issues. I want to help my kids realize there is a big world out there, with big needs. The world is bigger than the neighborhood, town, country we live in. Large maps are expensive or tacky. Map mural to the rescue!!!
What we needed to create our mural:
- An overhead projector
- An image of the world
- Plastic Wrap
- Permanent marker
- Paint Brushes
- 2 hours of kids-hands-off drying time (easier said than done)
To make the mural I printed off a picture of the world. Then I put the plastic wrap over the picture and traced the world with my marker. This meant that I didn’t have to buy transparency paper – I’m a tightwad. Project your image onto the wall and fill it in. This is super easy!
This is what our kitchen area looked like when we moved in and you can see the progression of the mural to completion. I like my new kitchen!!!
Where did we get our inspiration?
Michell, from Girl in Air, has a fun crafty blog – check her out!
I love overhead projectors! This was great way to use one.
Cool how’d you get the projector
begged and borrowed 🙂
Your blog is pretty impressive! We were wondering if you accept guest posts which are relevant to your preferred topics, specifically those about home improvement and remodeling. If you do welcome such articles, kindly send us an email. We’d love to hear from you.
More power to you and your blog!
That’s just brilliant, Rachel. I’ve thought about buying one of those wallpaper style full wall maps, but this is really cool, and clean. Did I mention previously someplace that I like clean design? LOL. And the fact that it’s DIY and cost very little makes it even better. I’m tweeting this post. Have a great evening!
What a fun accent wall! Great job! Our church has fun stuff like this in it. Never crossed my mind till I read this to bring that stuff home. Thanks.
You’re the coolest preschool, homeschooling mom I know! 🙂
So cool! looks great!
So clever! It’s been years since I’ve seen an overhead projector! Are you going to mark all the places you’ve been?
Cool! I love the simple and clean look of that world map mural. My class made one when I was in 8th grade, but we painted and labeled EVERY country. It took us the entire school year to finish. While good for a geography class, it was a bit much for a home. Where did you get the overhead projector? I’m wondering if they can be rented or something…. I also love your stained glass piece.
That looks awesome!! So glad to have inspired!!
That is SO SO cool! Love it! Also really love the teeny tiny princess standing on a chair:)
I love the way it turned out!
That looks great!
Love it! We have a big, not-nearly-as-nice-looking map poster in the kids’ playroom. Your map looks great and worthy of a place in your breakfast nook.
That looks great Rachel! I love the simple colors you used, it makes it look so much more striking and graphic.
Visiting from Kimbas — just saw the one at girl in air — amazing projects! Love how you made your own transparency! 🙂
Appreciate it for this wonderful post, I am glad I discovered this website on yahoo.
That is great. Nice project with great impact.
