It is important to learn
how to brush your teeth from childhood through adulthood. It can be hard for children to really understand the proper way to floss and brush so we made a
model mouth to practice with.
Kids Activities Blog hopes your child has fun with this project while also learning
how to brush your teeth properly.
How to Brush Your Teeth
I’m constantly talking to my preschooler about why it is important to take care of your teeth. I’ve shown her how to floss and brush but I thought it would be cool to have one of those little models of a mouth that I’ve seen at her dentist’s office. I think it would really help her see how the floss gets between her teeth and she could actually watch as I brushed the surface of each tooth.
Those models are kind of expensive though so we decided to make our own. This one is so inexpensive and easy to make.
Supplies:
- Scissors
- White egg carton
- A large piece of cardboard
- Dark pink paint
- Paintbrush
- Stapler
First cut the top off the egg carton and discard. Separate the egg cradles into two rows. These will be the rows of upper teeth and lower teeth.
Make a partial cut after the second and fourth egg cradles on each row so that each section has two “teeth”. This will allow the row of teeth to curve in the mouth. Make sure you don’t cut all the way through though. You want to keep it together as one piece if you can help it.
Make a Giant Mouth Model
Find the center of your cardboard. Measure about an inch and a half on either side of the center and draw a line. This should make about a 3 inch section on the cardboard. This will be the back of the mouth.
Place a row of teeth on the cardboard with the back of the mouth along one of the lines you just drew. Trace around the teeth so you know where to cut the cardboard.
Repeat with the other row of teeth on the opposite side of the cardboard. Cut out the mouth and crease the cardboard along both sides of the back of the mouth where you drew the two lines. The creases will help the mouth open and close neatly.
Now paint both sides of the cardboard a dark pink color.
Model of Teeth
Finally, we placed the teeth back into their positions and just stapled the outer edges of the egg carton to the outer edges of the cardboard. And there is a model of teeth for your child to learn and play with. My little girl loves to pretend to make our mouth talk!
Brushing Your Teeth
I love how helpful this model has been in talking about dental hygiene with my little girl. She is able to watch me floss and brush the teeth and then she can watch herself do it too so we can talk about if she is doing it correctly. This is so much easier than trying to show her with a mirror how to do it in her own mouth! Plus this model mouth is extra large so it is really easy for her to work with.
More Kids Activities
We hope this activity makes it a little more fun to talk to your kids about the importance of caring for your teeth. This model mouth has been used many times in our home for both education and fun. What a fun idea! You could put something on the “teeth” and have them brush it off too, to further show how they’re missing a lot if they only brush the front of their real teeth 🙂
How cool! A super fun way to teach the importance and strategy behind teeth brushing. My youngest is about to have her first dental appointment- I think we’ll do this first!! Thanks for the post. Pinning now!!
This is such a cool activity. I love the giant teeth.
