Here are some great tips from Janelle Twyford Silvis, owner of AlleeOops Photography on how to take a great photo that today!
- EYES often hold the key to the story told by a photograph. Â Whatever clothing or makeup is worn should not take away from the faces, especially the eyes.
- When determining COLORS, neutrals and blues work best. Â Khaki's, greens that do not glow in the dark, blues that compliment the eyes and/or the sky and jewel tones are good, too. Shiney or patterned clothing competes for the attention of the person trying to enjoy the photo. Â We â„¢d rather see your face than your pants and shirt. Â Groups should wear clothing that compliments one another. Everyone wearing the same color if fine but types of shirts should be appropriate for who is wearing them.
- JEWELRY is fine if you normally wear jewelry. Â Remember that the objective is to compliment the face rather than to feature the jewelry so simple is best.
- CASUAL versus DRESSED UP “ Ask yourself where your photo will be hung within your home or office.  Clothing should be timeless rather than hip or the latest fashion trend.  Children are often fidgity if they are wearing new or stiff clothing. The more natural and comfortable the child, the more at ease they will be in front of the camera.  While they often like having new outfits, they quickly grow tired of them if not allowed to act normally.
- SHOES are often part of the photograph. A full length photo without feet makes one wonder if the subject forgot their shoes.
- LADIES: MAKEUP should not be overdone. I keep the lighting to a natural setting. HAIR should be as natural as possible. Remember that if you wear your hair in your eyes, it will appear that way in the photo as well. Â Â If you are a HAT person, remember that the hat should complement your face. Many times, hats project shadows onto the face or cover much of the face. Â Play with hats in front of the mirror before deciding to wear one for a photograph.
- CLOTHING: Long pants lengthen legs and long sleeves compliment ladies arms. Â Holiday sweaters can be pretty busy so think about how matching sweaters with multiple designs might show up in a photograph. Solids are best.
Most important to remember is that photos tell a story. Whenever someone poses for the camera, they are telling a story. It is up to the viewing to interpret. Â Practice looking at some of your family photos and see if you can guess what story is being told.
