Finding the
best 3DS Games for kids can sometimes be tricky. They have definite opinions about their
favorite video games.
What seems like a perfectly lovely game to me may be met with eyerolling. Kids Activities Blog is on a mission today to find the best 3DS video games that kids are sure to favorite.
Best 3DS Games
I thought I would go to the source on this. Each of my three boys have a 3DS and regularly play their favorite video games. Over time, we have amassed a large selection of video games for the Nintendo 3DS.
I asked each of them to rank their top video games for the 3DS. I expected that they would choose some of the same games and I would be creating a single list. When the first two returned with completely different games, I thought it might be better to describe the boy and their age and separate the games into three favorite lists.
Favorite Video Games
Our first list of best 3DS games comes from my oldest son, Ryan. Ryan is 11 and loves games of all sizes. He is a competitor that likes to win. His academic strength is math. A favorite day for him would be to spend the day golfing with grandpa followed by a game of chess.
Ryan’s {age 11} favorite 3DS Video Games:
- Super Mario Brothers 2
- Super Mario 3D Land
- Mario Kart 7
- Super Monkey Ball
Reid is the middle child. He is 9 and loves all things artistic. His academic strength is his love for history and literature. A favorite day for him would be to spend the day building LEGOs and making LEGO stop-motion videos.
Reid’s {age 9} favorite video games for the 3DS:
- LEGO Lord of the Rings
- LEGO Star Wars III
- LEGO Pirates of the Caribbean
- Rollercoaster Tycoon 3D
- Steeldiver
Rhett is the youngest child. He just turned 7 and has been playing video games since nearly birth. He skipped playing with toddler and preschool games and jumped into whatever his older brothers were doing. He is a participator and up for just about anything. A favorite day for him would be doing or going anywhere new or fun.
A note about the Nintendo 3DS for kids under 7: Nintendo has recommended the 3D mode on the 3DS for children ages 7 and up. There is a slider next to the upper 3DS screen that allows a player to select 2D, 3D or anything in between. Rhett has been playing games in the 2D mode until recently. It was one of the cool things about turning 7, “Now I can play my 3DS in 3D!” The funny thing is that on many games he still prefers the 2D mode.
Rhett’s {age 7} best 3DS games:
- Mario Kart 7
- Pilot Wings Resort
- Wreck-It-Ralph
- Super Mario 3D Land
- Steeldiver
I thought it was interesting that several games made two lists:
Mario Kart 7,
Super Mario 3D Land and
Steeldiver. BUT no game made all three lists.
It goes to show how many quality games are out there for this platform and how three boys raised under the same roof, sharing the same room can have vastly different options on what is the best 3DS game!

She loves the appointment because she sometimes receives packages in the mail from Nintendo and the title makes her very popular at her kids’ school among her boys’ friends. Hey Holly,
I was on the hunt for an article about Best Nintendo 3DS Games today when I found your post: BEST 3DS GAMES {FAVORITE VIDEO GAMES}.
Great stuff!
I really like how you round them up.
Actually, I just published a blog on Nintendo 3DS Games: 10 INSANE Reviews of (2019).
As someone that writes a lot about Nintendo 3DS Games, I thought you’d like to see it.
Let me know if you want to check it out.

What great lists! I have a 12 year old and a 6 year old. I’m amazed at how different their choices are when it comes to games! My older one has played almost every car racing game ever made, but the younger one just can’t be bothered (except for mario kart). He is completely enraptured by pokemon and the new skylanders games. I’d love to know what your boys think of those!
It is so hard to be knowledgeable about different games that are available (and different platforms) as a parent, especially a parent who is not especially interested in video games!
My 7 year old like Mario Bros 2 and also Lego Star Wars. Anything Star Wars at the moment, in fact.
I think our 7 year olds would get along REALLy well. Thanks so much!
