Baby Beluga was one of my favorite songs as a child. As a parent, I regularly sing the sweet song to my kids. So of course I was totally thrilled when I saw that Yo-Yo Ma teamed up with Raffi to perform a very special rendition of “Baby Beluga.”
This “song of comfort” was in honor of the 40th anniversary of the song.
The New Baby Beluga Verse
There’s something incredibly comforting about Baby Beluga, so it’s no wonder that it’s one of Yo-Yo Ma’s latest “songs of comfort.” The 40-year-old song not only has a catchy tune, but it stands the test of time as a sweet song about a baby whale swimming wild and free.
Add in Yo-Yo Ma playing the cello as Raffi sings and plays the guitar, and you’ve got a beautiful rendition of the classic song.
As if that wasn’t reason enough to love the latest version of Baby Beluga, Raffi also added a new verse! This verse, he says in the video, is for all the Beluga grads out there: aka, all of us who grew up listening to the song.
The verse includes:
Now you’ve grown and you’re on your way, making waves in the boundless bay. Your shining light and your dreams alive for the ones you’ve brought this way. Grown-up beluga, sing a song of peace, sing a song of diversity, child-honoring, social justice, climate action. We need to hear you!
While the lyrics are amazing on their own, it truly is worth a listen to, again and again. But be forewarned, it just may bring tears to your eyes.
