Texas Nature Challenge and you can too!
What: *You have 11 weeks to visit as many participating parks and nature
areas in North Central Texas as you can! You will view native wildlife,
dip your feet in creeks, rivers, and draw and write about your
observations while learning more about nature and science in your
neighborhood! (*Quoted from the Texas Nature Challenge website.)
I love that it incorporates assigned Missions, so you don’t have to be creative & come up with new things to do. You’ll be introduced to some new areas of the Metroplex that you may not have considered visiting with children before. The Challenge will give you tasks to complete at each destination. Activities from the Austin Area Challenge include things like taking rubbings of tree bark, measuring water quality at a creek with the provided tools, exploring a sculpture garden & looking for specific things, & visiting an art museum to complete a Mission. (These are NOT the DFW Missions…they are not posted yet. Please use the Austin Area Challenge Missions as examples of what might be possible in the DFW area!)
There are 11 weeks to complete your Missions, and at the end? There are prizes! My son is very, very motivated by “winning”…he was born that way…so this is right up his alley. Participation prizes will
be awarded at the closing ceremonies for most sites visited, best
scrapbook, best photo, and more. So if your child expresses themselves through pencil & paper, photography, or just checking off that list of Missions, there are many ways to motivate your children to get outside & explore with you!
Registration is FREE (who doesn’t love free?), however some of the sites for Missions have admission costs (gardens, sculpture museums, etc.) Each Mission will list the cost of admission (if any) & appropriate ages for the Mission so you’ll know ahead of time whether that Mission works for your family or not.
You can either register online now, or attend the Opening Ceremonies on Saturday, May 22nd from 10:00 a.m. “ 2:00 p.m. at Trinity River
Audubon Center 6500 S. Loop 12 Dallas, TX 75217.
I encourage you to poke around the Texas Nature Challenge website & see what it’s all about. I can’t wait for the announcement of the DFW Missions! Will you join us?
