Many of you know that there is a
hair salon near Dallas that I LOVE.
They are always doing new and fun things, so I wasn’t surprised when the owner, Lori, called me to see if I was interested in trying something new.
Yes!
And then she went on to explain that it was a semi-permanent hair straightening procedure called
Brazilian Blow Out.
Oh yes!
I have THAT kinda hair. Â The kind that straightens if tortured into it, but my hair would really prefer to just be poofy. Â I have lived my whole life with BIG TEXAS HAIR. Â That is why I had to move to Texas…
so my hair will fit in.
I have read about several different hair straightening systems, but have never followed through on trying one. Â I think I am still suffering for 27 years from
post-perm trauma. Â I got a perm when I was 14 and have had frizzy hair ever since that day. Â I realize that rationally the perm didn’t create my forever frizz, but doing ANYTHING to my hair makes me a bit nervous.
I looked a little further into the
Brazilian Blow Out procedure and found:
- It doesn’t contain formaldehyde or any harsh chemicals.
- It improves the health and texture of the hair by creating a protein layer around the hair.
- It lasts 10-12 weeks and doesn’t do anything permanent to the hair.
Did I mention…yes?
When I scheduled the appointment at Splurge Salon, they said it would take all afternoon, so I marked off my calendar.
Here are the steps to the Brazilian Blow Out as I understand them:
- Wash hair.
- Divide hair into small sections and put on the magical Brazilian Blow Out potion.
- Work the magical Brazilian Blow Out potion through the hair.
- Blow dry the hair in small sections while straightening the hair with a brush.
- Use flat iron on hair.
- Wash hair…YES, after it is all dry and pretty they have to re-wash it and start all over again!
- Blow dry the hair in small sections while straightening the hair with a brush.
- Use flat iron on hair.
- Whoo hoo! Â Straight hair.

I ended up buying the Brazilian Blow Out Shampoo, Conditioner and the Daily Smoothing Serum which promised to make my newly
straightened state last a bit longer.
From start to finish it took them 3 hours –
I have a lot of hair.
I washed my hair for the first time a few days later and found that my blow-drying time was cut by 20 minutes. Â The other thing that was pretty amazing was that I didn’t have to be careful about brushing the hair straight while blow drying because it wasn’t frizzy.
It wasn’t frizzy.
Previous to receiving the Brazilian Blow Out, I could NEVER blow dry my hair and then NOT use a flat iron. Â My hair tended to take on the shape of a Christmas Tree without
flat iron intervention.
Now I can blow dry and throw it into a pony tail. Â I still like it better when I flat iron it, BUT that time has been cut in half as well. Â It is more like I am
touching up with the flat iron than performing
major flattening surgery.
I have been really happy with it, but had no idea how it had changed my life until last week when I was out in the rain…

I am standing in 100% humidity and I still have straight hair.
This has never happened.
This is a miracle.
those brazilians are effing geniuses.
First I just saw “I had a Brazilian” and I was kinda shocked you were blogging about it…. hee.
Your hair looks great!
You look lovely. But the best part of it is that what you consider straight in that pic with the umbrella is what I would consider super wavy on my hair!! Awesomeness. (You have approximately eighty gazillion times more hair than I do!)
Oh congrats! I’ve been reading a lot about this & haven’t been able to work myself up to do it. Maybe come spring since in the winter my frizzies tend to die down
Whew – was afraid for a minute. Couldn’t they think of another name? It’s too close to Brazilian wax. I wasn’t sure why anyone would want to straighten…uh…nevermind.
Your hair looks fabulous!
I am still madly jealous over your hair. As soon as I find a salon here, I’m doing it! Also, love the line about moving to Texas so your hair would fit in. Classic!
Oh, so maybe I should move to Texas, cause I have a whole lotta that poufy hair thing going on, and so much of it that I thought it wouldn’t be a big deal to pluck the occasional grey hair. That is, until the stylist scared the bejeezes out of me when he said he sees women coming in with bald spots. Apparently, we tend to pluck the hairs we see at the front, resulting in bald spots in the most visible area. Yikes!
Thinking a Brazilian Blowout with highlights might be the easier, cheaper move.
Glad it worked for you! A word of caution. The state of Oregon recently issued an alert due to the dangerous amounts of formaldehyde in this product. Not sure if you had heard about this yet. It puts people at serious risk for lung issues. http://www.koinlocal6.com/news/local/story/Hazard-alert-issued-for-hair-smoothening-products/4AnZU-68a0SU5YH8s5CTsA.cspx
They issued a statement Monday that it is a safe procedure and the levels of formaldehyde were well below the safe levels. I only researched because I love the Brazilion blow out and needed to find out myself.
This is the most amazing thing this frizzy-headed gal has ever seen!
Texas weather isn’t good for hair at all. I used to have very straight hair, you know, until about 6th grade when I got that perm. My hair has had a natural curl to it ever since.
I’ve been dying to try the Brazilian Blow Out, but Holy Expensiveness Batman!! Maybe Santa will bring me a gift certificate to my favorite salon!!
Glad you like it, can’t wait to try it some time!!
