A few weeks ago I went and visited the strawberries.
Yesterday they came and visited me (and 20 bloggers) here in Dallas.
Those strawberries are so sweet!
Literally.
The Dallas bloggers munched on strawberry soup, sandwiches, tacos and sliders while sipping strawberry cocktails.
We listened to Carolyn from the CA Strawberry Commission, Skyped with a grower from California and heard about the health benefits of strawberries from David Grotto.
And there was a lot of chatting, photographing and hugging.
Overall, the California Strawberries were given a warm Texas welcome.
We even arranged warm weather for their visit.
I have been excited to work with the California Strawberry Commission and the CA Strawberry Tour because…I like strawberries.
Over the last month I have gotten a behind-the-scenes look at how having strawberries on my oatmeal each morning is made possible.
Hundreds of family strawberry growers who have been farming for generations plant tiny strawberry plants on sandy soil across cool valleys. Â Those strawberry plants are high maintenance and prefer 51 degree soil temperature, just the right amount of rain, cool afternoon breezes and often demand an ocean view. Â Once the strawberries are ripe (and not a moment before), they are picked and immediately driven to a cooler. Â They spend 4 hours in a cooler to get to the perfect shipping temperature. Â As soon as they are the perfect shipping temperature, they are packed into waiting refrigerated trucks that drive them straight to Texas where they are placed on grocery shelves.
It is possible, in Texas, I am eating strawberries that were picked just 48 hours earlier in California.
I find that amazing and have realized how inexpensive strawberries really are when you consider the 1000’s of things that could go wrong between a seedling being planted in California and my Texas kitchen table.
Strawberries are a lot of bang for your buck. Â They not only taste great, but they are good for you.
- Strawberries are an excellent source of Vitamin C. Â Once serving provides an adult with 160% of their recommended Daily Value.
- Strawberries are a source of folate.
- Strawberries can help heart health because they provide 3 grams of fiber per serving.
- Strawberries have antioxidants which are absorbed within one hour after eating. Â They can help fight disease and illness.
Space was limited and Dallas is a bit of a drive for many of you, but I don’t want to leave you out.
I have 4 extra goody bags that I would love to send to randomly selected readers.
Each goody bag is a reusable bag that scrunches into a cute little strawberry (pictured to the left) and contains: Â 101 Optimal Foods for Life by David Grotto, 2 Strawberry Recipes for Everyday Cookbooks (one for you and one to giveaway to a friend or on your blog) and a super cute strawberry shaped USB flash drive with all sorts of fun strawberry information.

I just love how strawberries are sweet and a little tart at the same time. So perfect and refreshing. Just make a cocktail using strawberries too.

Thanks for a chance to win this lovely giveaway!
Strawberries, to me, are the perfect food, They can be used in sweet as well as savory recipes. They are wonderful eaten alone or with cream. They are low in calories and fat. They add color to any recipe.
truly love strawberries, on cereal, plain and mixed with greek yogurt frozen are the tops- its yummy- i even have pb and strawberries for a sandwich instead of jelly
While those big California strawberries are lovely to look at, the smaller ones that are raised here in Oklahoma are so much better! They have much better flavor and are ripe clear through. I have had some Florida berries were very good but I still want the smaller ones that are picked when they are fully ripe and not just after they turn red. When I cut into a strawberry that is white in the center, I just want to cry. Of course I realize that fully ripened strawberries cannot be shipped and have a shelf life of only a day or there abouts. I have to get my Oklahoma (or Arkansas) berries into the freezer the same day I get them, but winter pancakes or waffles with strawberries are a wonderful treat. It is fast approaching peach season here. I will be loading my freezer with peaches in a week or so. Wish you could all enjoy our good peaches. Have seen some nice Georgia peaches in the store the last couple of weeks. They can be picked and shipped before they are ripened, as they will continue to ripen, unlike strawberries .
Strawberries are so good and good for you. When I was a kid I would sneak into my grand mothers freezer and eat them straight out of the container (boy did she get mad). Now I like to freeze them for later or make jam. Only problem here is that by the time I get them ready to go they have mostly been eaten.
Such fun! I shared all the recipes so all of our readers can enjoy some of the same yumminess we did!

It sounds like you guys had so much fun! I would have loved to be there with you all but there wasn’t anyone to watch my minions last minute. I think I’m going to give that taco recipe a try though – they look SO yummy!
I love that strawberries are tasty, juicy, so good for you and instantly make you feel like it’s summer when you eat them. 🙂
Here’s my writeup of event: California Strawberries Dominate Summer Menu http://poshmom.blogspot.com/2011/06/california-strawberries-dominate-summer.html
My latest pregnancy craving has been strawberries with a scoop of vanilla Greek yogurt on top. My husband is sick of hearing about how much I am loving my berries…
