America has many special days, ranging from important holidays like the 4th of July, Labor Day, Presidents’ Day, Martin Luther King Day, to random holidays, such as National Backward Day, National Cat Day, and even National Waffle Day!
In fact, here are some of our favorite quirky, funny, and special holidays that can be celebrated with the entire family:
Holidays can be official and Unofficial. Official holidays usually are created by the government, and it means people usually get the day off from work and school. These holidays can be religious, like Christmas, Diwali, etc, or they can be national, like 4th of July or Constitution Day.
On the other hand, unofficial holidays are not sanctioned by the government, and this means people do not get a day off and businesses stay open. These holidays can include national and world awareness days, such as Batman Day and National Puppy Day.
But have you ever wondered how a National Holiday is done? Well, there are two situations. When it comes to national food holidays, the President signs a House and Senate resolution into law, although the President can proclaim a food holiday even without the approval of Congress. Most of these holidays are perpetuated by marketing and PR people.
However, if we are talking about more serious holidays, such as Columbus Day, it is slightly more difficult. In fact, only four holidays like that have been added to the calendar in the past 100 years. These holiday proposals are all about honor and are a great way to recognize important people or cultural days.
Did you know you can make your own national holiday? There’s a day for that! Every year, on March 26, we celebrate Make Up Your Own Holiday Day. It’s the one day where you can think of a person, animal, food, or whatever you want, and create a holiday to celebrate it.
What holiday will you create this year?
