In all the pomp and pageantry of the Olympics, it’s easy to remember that each of these athletes is also (for the most part) just a young person who has worked exceptionally hard to get where they are. Olympic athletes train most of their lives to get to where they are, so when something happens to disqualify them the pain is discernible on their faces. That’s exactly what happened when this young Spanish swimmer was disqualified for diving in before the start. With a crumpled spirit, he gathered his belongings and went backstage…and then THIS happened!
I don’t know about you, but I definitely cheered along with the crowd as this young man returned to the race. I understand the rule and why it has to be there, but I’m also so grateful for judges who were able to look past the rule and give an athlete his chance – possibly his only chance ever – to swim for the gold.
