Elizabeth supposes there is a Santa Clause convention in Tucumcari, New Mexico.

After all, any one of the gentlemen we meet on this dusty ribbon of desert on Route 66 could fill in the for the big guy come December.

Long white beards? Check.

Sparkly eyes? Check.

Friendly disposition? Check.

But Tucumcari is known for the way it's working to preserve the distinct feel of mid-century Americana: For example, there's a fund specifically to save the pink and turquoise neon signs announcing motels.

Furthermore, the town is making it a priority to save ”and build upon ”the fantastic murals sprinkled on its walls.

And for the photographer, that's Heaven.

We just had to peek into the giant stucco teepee at Teepee Curios.

Open since the 1940s and run today by a Santa in a cowboy hat and his friendly mutt, it offers goodies ranging from taxidermied poisonous snakes to precious Indian pottery.

Elizabeth says you have to stop if you have kids.

Here's her report on why.

People soooooooo should go to Teepee Curios because there are colored fake rabbit tails, bean shakers, gem frogs, pens, jewelry and lots of Route 66 merchandise.

They also have a real, life German Shepherd dog behind the counter. She jumps up to greet customers but is very friendly.

Also, bring your allowance because the items are pretty affordable.

The area around the shop is also classic Route 66 with old signs and pretty mountains.

There is also a cool western vibe all around.

If you are close to New Mexico I recommend the Teepee Curios for everyone.
