Short A Learning Activity with Bob Books

My daughter is so excited!   She’s reading!!!   Last Spring she was able to sound out words and would occasionally surprise me by putting them together, we took the summer off – and now she’s taking reading by storm!   She just finished Beginning Readers 1 of Bob Books and is starting Beginning readers 2 and the Kindergarten Sight Word collection of stories!   They fit right into our Activity-A-Day Literacy Calendar.   Last week we practiced reading with short A words.

Do you ever wonder if your newly reading child is just memorizing the words on the page?   Or if they are “really reading”?   With the help of some foam alphabet stickers and some post-it notes we made a practice page.   The foam letters formed the sounds that we were practicing and we added a few consonants to the post-its.   My son got to change the post-its to re-create silly sentences for his sister to read:   “Cat sat on Pam” or “Pat rat on Sam” or his favorite sentence “Pat sat on ham”.   I knew that if my daughter was able to read these recreations of the sounds we had been studying that she really grasped the concept of the sounds in the Bob Books stories.   Yesterday she read the book “Mat Hid” and we had fun re-creating the story taking turns hiding dolls “Mat” and “Dot” and finding them!   It was fun to bring reading to life.   Do your kids want to join us in learning to read short A words?   Here is a list of words we are reviewing:

We already had and love our Bob Beginning Books Series and was thrilled when they sent us complimentary copies of the Kindergarten and First Grade Readers for us to enjoy and share with you!   My daughter loves reading with them!   I am sure we will include them in future learning activities as well.

  2. I love the Bob Book Series. All of my children grew up with them. What an exciting time it is when the reading begins. 🙂

  5. Thanks for joining WMCIR! I guess my daughter is about the only child in blogosphere who had no interest in Bob books. She found them mind-numbingly boring. Progressive Phonics, on the other hand, worked brilliantly for her. It seems to me that every child’s journey to reading has the same milestones, but they take different ways to reach them. What I find interesting is that even though we used Phonics approach, my daughter is totally a sight reader now – her fluency continues to surprise me.

  8. One thing though. “aw” doesn’t make the short “a” sound. They’re with the short o – along with dog, autumn, water…
