A small tragedy occurred on Sunday, July 19, 2009 at 2:46 pm.   Santa Clause and the Tooth Fairy were both killed in the minds of Austin and Brodie.   While this is a part of growing up it came a little too soon for me. I was one of those kids that believed in Santa Clause a little too long.   I can't remember the exact age I was when I stopped believing, but I do know I was the last of my friends to figure it out.   I loved Santa and to this day swear I saw him leaving my grandparents ™ house one cold Christmas morning.   I wanted to hold on to the magic of Santa as long as I could.   As a parent I transferred that onto my kids. Yesterday Austin and Brodie came downstairs while the babies were napping and asked the following, dreaded, questions. Is Santa Clause real?   Or do you and Daddy leave the presents for us? santa died FEAT *insert sound of my heart breaking* I contemplated my answer.   Do I lie to them?   Do I dance around it?   I decided to be honest, but not spill the beans. Do you think he is real?   That is the only thing that matters. Austin piped up, Well, we have been talking and we have our suspicions.   I mean, we doubt it.   Reindeer can't fly and I really doubt one has a red nose. The time came when I finally said, Santa is a fun tradition to believe in.   It's been fun thinking there was a jolly fat man that brought you presents, right?   But, no Santa is just a fun thing we do with kids.   He is not real. I braced myself for the onslaught of disappointment and hurt the boys might feel.   I mean, Brodie is just shy of 7 years old.   On the young side to find out Santa is a fraud.   But it never came.   In fact, they both started laughing their heads off. You mean you and Daddy actually bought us the Wii?   THAT IS SO COOL!! Who knew that the debunking of Santa would work out so well in my favor?   They then brought up the Tooth Fairy and I just spilled that indeed there was no flying pixie that came into the house to take our teeth and leave us money. I later thought about the consequences of this conversation.   Austin and Brodie after all have to small baby brothers and we don't want the fun spoiled for them.   So I did ask the boys if they would now be the Santa helpers of the house.   Their job is to protect our secret about Santa and the Tooth Fairy. Hopefully Chase and Evan will believe for a long time to come.   I am not sure I am ready to handle the death of Santa completely.

  1. Me too Santa It is good to help around and it is so nice for someone or kids or people to help the young ones still believe in magic and Santa and the tooth fairy and the Easter Bunny and Mother Nature and Father nature and all that kind of stuff!

  2. As Oscar Wilde once said, I think rumours of my death are a little premature!
Glad to hear that Austin & Brodie will be around to help this Christmas Eve – will mum be putting out my festive drink, as usual?
