Playing with your Food: Ways to learn with preschoolers

Playing with foodHere is a great list of ten (I’ll try to add more as I think of them) ways to help teach your preschoolers about the sense of taste!

  1. Explore tastes of salty, sweet, sour and bitter (lemons, coco powder, candy, potato chips, etc.)   Make a list of salty foods, sweet foods, etc.
  2. Clip coupons together
  3. Make a mind map/collage of favorite foods or of food groups – what “matches” or goes with those foods (ex: chocolate and milk, or peanut butter and jelly)
  4. Bake something
  5. Dissect a vegetable
  6. Plant some food seeds (can be in a window planter so kids can watch them grow)
  7. Make a cereal or pasta necklace
  8. Make/decorate a restaurant-like menu of foods that you eat regularly
  9. Make a food sculpture out of leftovers and then eat it.   This is a great way to clean out the fridge!
  10. Make a tongue map.   Find out what areas of your tongue have the ability to taste salty, sweet, bitter and sour flavors.playing with food

Want to make your own googly-eyed food creature?   All you need is some ramen noodles, chow mein noodles, malt balls, gel capsules, marshmallows.   Here is a great post with detailed pictures and step-by-step instructions!

  3. This looks like something that will help keep my kids busy while they are off for winter break. Sometimes they get rather anxious during this time of year.

Personally, I think it all goes by too quick.
