Mulling spices is a yummy spice combo that is mainly used in fall drinks, like hot apple cider! It’s what gives your fall favorites that extra little kick of spice and flavor. 

Looking for an easy way to make your house smell lovely? Set a simmering pot on your stove filled with water and mulling spices! (Be sure to keep an eye on it, though).

Mulling spices can be made from cinnamon sticks, cardamom pods, allspice berries, whole cloves, star anise pods, dried orange peel, and peppercorns.

To make mulling spices you need: cinnamon sticks, cardamom pods, allspice berries, whole cloves, star anise pods, dried orange peel, and black peppercorns.

Ingredients – Mulling Spices Recipe 

  • 3 oz. cinnamon sticks 
  • 1/4 cup allspice berries
  • 1/3  cup cardamom pods
  • 1/4 cup whole cloves
  • 1/4  cup star anise pods
  • 1/3 cup dried orange peel – store bought or dried in oven
  • 1/4 cup black peppercorns

Pour all of your mulling spices ingredients into a Ziploc baggy.
Step 1

Place cinnamon sticks, cardamom pods, allspice berries, cloves and star anise in large resealable bag.

How Long Do Mulling Spices Last? 

Technically, the spices in your mulling spice won’t go “bad”, but they will slowly start to lose flavor.

Be sure to store your mulling spices in an airtight container, in a cool, dry space.

Mulling spices can remain good for up to 3-4 years, but I prefer to swap them out for fresh after 6 months at the most.
