The Hunger Games prequel — The Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes — may not be hitting bookshelves until May, but it’s already getting a film adaption. We’re not surprised at all… and we can’t wait!
What is the Hunger Games prequel about?
Katniss Everdeen was the star and District 12 tribute of the original young adult dystopian books, but don’t expect to see her or her fellow tributes in the prequel. After all, there is a whole lotta history to cover in the world of Panem, the North American country made up of the Capitol and 13 districts.
The original books focused on the 74th hunger games (and beyond). They also focused on Katniss Everdeen’s plight to overthrow the tyrannical President Snow, played by Donald Sutherland.
The Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes goes back 64 years in Panem’s history to the 10th annual Hunger Games. In the prequel Snow is only 18 years old, when he’s chosen to be a tribute mentor. That’s a task he’s thrilled to take on… until he learns he’s supposed to mentor a District 12 female tribute. Even though Snow was the antagonist in the original books and movies, he’s — gasp! — the hero in the prequel. Intrigued yet? We are!
What We Know (So Far) About the Film Adaption
Lionsgate developed all four of the original Hunger Games movies, and on April 21, they announced they’re bringing back Francis Lawrence to direct the prequel.
Lawrence did an amazing job at directing the Catching Fire film and parts 1 and 2 of the Mockingjay movies, so here’s hoping he does another equally wonderful job at adapting the prequel. Nina Jacobson and Brad Simpson are also returning as the producers.
But best of all, the author of the books, Suzanne Collins, is also back to adapt the screenplay. If anyone knows the books inside and out, it’s her. She’s also thrilled that Lionsgate is again in charge of the film adaption. As she told Entertainment Weekly:
“From the beginning, they have treated the source material with great respect, honoring the thematic and narrative elements of the story, and assembling an incredible team both in front of and behind the camera.”
So who will play a young Coriolanus Snow and the other characters? That hasn’t yet been announced, but you can bet we’ll be waiting with baited breath for more news about the adaption.
In the meantime, pre-order your copy of the Hunger Games prequel book, which officially comes out May 19, 2020.
