baby is reading a board book to herself, flipping through the pages, when she notices a dog. She’s sitting next to her dog, and she’s so excited that she wakes him up to show him the book. Take a look!
Not only does she show him the book, she points to the dog, and to the book, and back and forth again, as if to say, “That’s you. See? That’s you!” She absolutely associates the picture of that dog in that book with the real life dog next to her. Blows my mind. I don’t know if my kids made those same associations, but now that I see this, I’m guessing they did. Who knew?
When my kids were little I read to them all the time. It was hard for me to tell if they knew what I was reading, or if they even associated the things in the books with things in their lives, but their excitement for reading meant it didn’t matter to me. As they got older, they definitely understood and by then a strong foundation and love for reading had been built, so I never really thought much about it again, until now.
